Bean Pickers, Kent – Art Greeting Card (Royal Academy, 1970s)
£3.80 inc, VAT
Figurative 1970s painting of bean pickers in Kent—an RA-exhibited work reproduced as a fine art greeting card. Blank inside.
Description
A quietly powerful figurative painting of seasonal farm work in Kent. Three figures move between rows of bean poles, their silhouettes cut into a warm field of umbers and rust. The artist builds the scene in layered paint with drawing visible beneath the surface, giving the image the dry sheen and scumbled texture associated with oils/acrylics of the early 1970s.
Exhibited at the Royal Academy in the early ’70s, this work reads like a page from social history: patient, repetitive labour captured with elegant design—vertical stakes, cast shadows and reflective floor forming a subtle grid. The palette glows with tobacco browns and brick reds, while the figures remain tenderly observed.
