A wonderfully expressive and colourful hen, reproduced from an original mixed-media artwork by British artist Susan Horsfield.

Created with a deliberately loose and expressive approach, this little hen was never intended as a formal or highly detailed study. Susan Horsfield’s work was often about suggestion rather than precise representation, capturing enough of a subject to spark recognition, while leaving space for the viewer’s own imagination.

She also had a wonderful instinct for finding design within a subject. Here, the hen’s plumage becomes a lively arrangement of midnight blues, deep greens and touches of turquoise, punctuated by a flash of crimson and those wonderfully bright yellow feet. Pattern, colour and expressive marks are allowed to do as much of the storytelling as the drawing itself.

The result is spontaneous, characterful and slightly quirky, unmistakably a hen, but very much Susan’s interpretation of one.

Set against a clean, pale background, the simplicity of the composition allows the hen herself to take centre stage. The result is a cheerful and contemporary piece of wall art that would bring colour and personality to a kitchen, breakfast room or country interior, while sitting just as happily in a more modern home.
