A wonderfully expressive hen, full of colour, movement and character, reproduced from an original mixed-media artwork by British artist Susan Horsfield.

Rather than creating a precise or highly polished study, Susan used colour, texture and spontaneous mark-making to suggest the character of her subject. Rich reds, blues, ochres and earthy charcoal tones overlap and mingle across the hen’s plumage, while flashes of vivid colour and those wonderfully bright feet give the composition an energetic, playful quality.

Susan’s work was often about suggestion rather than literal representation, leaving space for the viewer’s imagination. She also had an instinctive ability to discover design within a subject, allowing pattern, line and colour to become as important as the subject itself.

The result is unmistakably a hen, but very much Susan’s interpretation of one — lively, individual and never intended to be taken too seriously.
